How come speeding truck drivers rearly get caught by the police?
Q. I see truck drivers speeding every time on the road when I drive. I also see them running through red traffic lights and overtaking other vehicles dangerously. Do they get away with it or not?
Asked by Luke S - Mon Feb 11 07:41:43 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Do you mean rarely? What you see is not the majority. I was highway patrol and did Motor Carrier Safety - which is a unit specifically for enforcement of laws and regulations regarding to truck drivers intra and interstate. If you pose this question to a truck driver I am sure his or her opinion will differ greatly than yours.

What do truck drivers do on their free time?
Q. I am frequently on I-5 in California and was wondering what truck drivers do to pass the time. You're in a huge truck all day driving, what is there to do? Listen to music, talk to your buds on the CB radio, eat...do you have any games that you play with other drivers, etc??! What is there to do to kill some time?
Asked by calstud4life - Tue May 22 12:14:10 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A professional truck driver should be focused on the road, the surroundings, and the truck gauges while driving. All of the things you mentioned are things that drivers do in their spare time plus sleep. A lot of the truckstops have tv lounges and/or movie theaters, and game rooms. Some truck stops even have "lot lizzards" who offer their services - EWWW! Most drivers don't have a lot of spare time as they have delivery appointments or time frames that they have to keep. They are only allowed a certain amount of drive time each day - so they have to make the most of that time. The quicker they get the load there the quicker they get another load. More loads/more miles = more money!

Truck drivers paying for their own drug test?
Q. Do truck drivers (CDL & non-CDL) have to pay for their own drug test or do the companies they work for pay? What about independant contractors?

A. The company pays for it. My friend's dad is a truck driver and they pay for it. If them or anyone wanted to do a drug test on themselves than they would have to pay for it, but not the ones to see if you can drive or keep driving or not.

What Busch or Truck drivers deserve a ride in a higher series?
Q. Like, what truck drivers deserve a Busch or Cup ride and what Busch drivers deserve a Cup ride? Erik Darnell, Matt Crafton, and Brendan Gaughan deserve a Busch ride IMO, and Johnny Benson deserves a Cup ride. Marcos Ambrose and Stephen Leicht deserve a Cup ride

A. Stephen Wallace!!! NOTTT!(he is terrible) Brendan Gaughn and Johnny Benson have already had a stint in cup. I dont know if a owner would be willing to risk bringing them back. After Stephen Leight and Brad Kasowlowski(I know I spelled that wrong) have a little bit more seat time in the Nationwide series they would be good candidates for a Cup ride. Im betting that someone will give Marcos Ambrose a shot next year. Travis Kvapil might get the call again. He has a short stint with Penske a few years back.

Why do Commercial truck drivers think they are driving race cars?
Q. They are switching lanes and etc. I can't tell you how many times I95 has been held up because truck drivers get into so many accidents. Why can't they stay in the lane that they are suppose to? aren't they burning more diesel fuel? I wanted to further add that I am not knocking trucks, I am fully aware that they are very important for the recieving of goods. However, safety on the road is the concern. One truck cut right in front of and I almost swerved because I was driving slight faster then the truck, its like he had no common sense!

A. As a driver myself, I understand what you are talking about. However, please don't let the few make you think we are all bad drivers. If I see a four wheeler darting in and out of traffic, does that mean you are a bad driver? No. Accidents: Study after study have shown that 75%+ of accidents involving heavy trucks are caused by the driver of the car. We really are professional drivers. The company I work for has less than .4 accidents per million miles driven (stats from the Department of Transportation, who regulates interstate trucking). That is much less than the accident rate for cars. Lane restrictions: Studies have also shown that restricting trucks to the right lane(s) cause many more accidents, especially in urban areas… [cont.]

How much do truck drivers make a year?
Q. My boyfriend's father is a truck driver, and he said that he may consider doing the same. He figured that since he only makes about 45K per year after taxes, he'd probably make more with truck driving. He asked his father, but his dad has been doing it for about 25 years, and he doesn't remember what his starting salary was. So how much would you make if you were a truck driver, not the ones who drive cross-country, but the ones who drive within 12 or so hours of their main location? Thanks for any help!
Asked by Marinabear! - Sun Jul 12 21:15:11 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This is something that is driven by the location more than anything. If you were talking about a teamster (union) job, it will vary by which company you drive for, even in the same locale. Different companies pay by different scales, some are a percentage of the loads, some are hourly, and others pay by mileage. By the 12-hours that you mention, that would be considered a regional driver, and would likely pay either by a percentage or by the mile. In West-central PA, where I am, a regional driver with one of the better companies in this area would see 40 cents per mile, which would translate to about $53k per year.

Why the truck drivers drive more in daylight than night on the freeway?
Q. As a driver , it is very annoying that I see two or more truck on the freeways , escpecially in the Southern California. I almost hit other car when it moves or merge the right lanes to the left lanes.
Asked by ShiningStar - Thu Jun 19 14:51:49 2008 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. For the very obvious reasons. We can see better. We don't get tired as easily. More places to stop, and eat, are open. The businesses we're delivering to are open during the day. Do I need to keep going? As a truck driver, I find it very annoying that there's so many cars on the road, getting in our way, tailgating us, etc. If you almost get hit, it means you're too close to the truck. It's that simple. You should always have enough space between you and any other vehicle, that there is almost 0% chance of an accident. Anything else, is your own fault.

Do you think truck drivers deserve respect?
Q. I'm asking this question because my husband is one of them. People complain about how much space they use on the road, and how they need lots of room to turn. They get the goods to the stores so you can buy them. Trains, boats, and plains can only go so far and it's the truck drivers who actualy get them to the department stores. I'm asking people to give them a little respect and yeild to them on the road when needed. Some truck drivers abuse there right on the road I agree, but there are the few that drive by the rules. Do you think that the goverment should also notice truck drivers and help them out by asking them questions about how the law applies to them and what they can do to help make it easier for them to get the help from… [cont.]

A. I'm an ex-trucker but that doesn't mean I think all truckers deserve respect. Like every profession this one has its idiots. Why should they get respect? But for those who think that trucking is a low skill job, maybe they should try it. I'm sure it would be quite funny since most people can't even drive their cars correctly. Actually I think you should have to spend two weeks in an 18-wheeler followed by two weeks on a motorcycle before you can get a car license... The rules? Some are good, some are stupid. If they keep a bad truck or a dead-tired driver off the road. Good. Believe me I don't want them out there either. But when the rules tell me I can't drive even when i'm not tired but then I can when I am tired because I couldn't… [cont.]

In Spain and Portugal, lorry (truck) drivers are blocking roads over the cost of diesel fuel?
Q. Will the US truck drivers do the same? What are some ways to bring immediate relief to the trucking industry? Which party democrats or republicans will help? Please note I said immediate .

A. Yes, the truckers should strike. Many of them lose money every day delivering crucial items to us. They have contracts with companies and there is no provision to raise the rates as their fuel costs go up. It's sad. Vote for Bob Barr, Libertarian 2008
