What British city suffered the most during the Blitz?
Q. Where I live (Manchester) suffered quite badly and I know that London, Coventry and Bristol suffered extremely badly, but in what order (by damage scale) did the cities suffer?

A. The History Today Companion to British History says that London had the largest share of the raids, with a third of the old City being destoryed, and extensive damage to the East End. Almost all major ports and cities suffered attacks, particularly Plymouth, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield. The raid on Coventry on 14 November 1940 destroyed the heart of the city and killed over 600 people. I looked at a couple of interent sites, one said that Liverpool was the most heavily bombed city after London, and the other said that Birmingham was, so there is evidently some competition for the title. I know the centre of Plymouth was completely destroyed by the raids. The town where I live, Dover, was so heavily bombed it was known as 'Hell [cont.]
