GNU Free Documentation License What is the usual financial outlay before moving into a rented flat? Q. I wanna get a rented flat from a letting agency. However, I am wondering what the expected outlay will be before I move in. Am I right in saying that normally you have to pay up four weeks rent up front, plus another four weeks rent as deposit? So basically before you move in you have to find 8 weeks rent. Is that right? Or is it worse than that (i.e. they expect you to pay 6 weeks rent as deposit, totalling 10 weeks rent before you move in? Thanks in advance for any answers. The deposit you pay is up to the agent - most common is either one month's rent or six week's rent, but it's legal to ask for anything up to two month's. My own agent asked for one month's rent plus 50 which is completely random. Then you'd be expected to pay rent in advance, which would usually be EITHER one calendar month, OR say you move in part way through the month and the landlord would prefer to collect the rent on the 1st of the month, then just the pro rated amount for the first month (e.g. you move in on the 15th, you pay about two weeks' rent).
