How to prevent outdoor surveillance camera from being stolen?
Q. We have a warehouse and installed outdoor camera along our wall to surveiling our parking lot and backyard inventory. Recently we have people stealing our camera and the police have no way of catching them and not bother to do anything about it. My questions is... how could we protect the camera that we installed outside our building from being stolen again? It's been stolen 3 times already. Please advise if you have any suggestion.

A. One way is to conceal it... Security is about multiple layers... How about adding another security camera (or 3) that is pointed at the one getting stolen? Putting it up higher so it is more difficult to reach. Using a security company that can install it and sy they will replace it if stolen (they have "security hardened" mounting hardware available).

How can an outdoor cat move into a new apartment,in a new area and become a indoor cat?
Q. My 3 years old castrated & outdoor male kitty moves to a new apartment, in a new area on the second floor so he won't be able to go out anymore. How much will it take for him to get used to it and what can i do to help him adjust with the new home and the new conditions?
Asked by SaveTheROOster - Sat Feb 24 09:59:10 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Kudos to you for wanting to keep your cat safe inside. Make sure that the cat has access to a window to see outside (TV for kitties) and get a scratching post big enough for it to climb on. Lots of toys, treats and TLC will help. It takes patience and time but soon the cat will even fear going outside.

what is the difference between indoor and outdoor fans?
Q. i need to put a floor fan outside so that my doggies can keep cool. besides the cord getting wet if it's raining, what is really the difference between an indoor and outdoor fan? the indoor ones are usually a lot cheaper and i plan on bringing it in if i think it's going to rain. So i guess my real question is, can i use an indoor fan safely outside? If not where can i get an inexpensive outdoor one?
Asked by teddybearluver05 - Thu Jun 5 10:55:51 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is stainless steel & marine steel type of fans you can get. They are 2 types of grades (quality) that I am aware. Marine is a higher quality. I think its 380 is the highest metal grade quality. They are better quality, the more weather protected it is. The woven fans are alright for alfresco areas also. (depends on how weather proof the area is). Places like beacon lighting have those sorts of fans. But most lighting places should have fans stocked.

Q. I have got some outdoor wood but don't know what i need to clean it with. I know you have to get the bugs and other things off it when you put it in the cage. But really just don't know.

A. put it in the oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. this will kill off any bugs or parasites. just to be sure spray it down with a 10% bleach solution 10 min before baking. keep an eye on it though and make sure it doesn't scorch. also it is recommended to remove the bark, you don't have to, but IMHO it looks better and most bugs live just under the bark anyway. mike

What is the best way to set up an outdoor surround sound system?
Q. I am looking to build an outdoor theatre in my backyard. This invloves projecting out of a window in my house onto a screen in my yard. What I want to know is how should I go about setting up 5.1 surround sound OUTSIDE. I need all weather proof speakers listed for outdoor use. I am also hoping to keep the price under $1000, as most of the budget is going into projection and the screen. Does anyone know of an outdoor 5.1 SET of speakers? Or should I buy speakers individually? Any help regarding any of the above is much appreciated.

A. Hmm, I had the same problem, and I came up with something really usefull. Here's how to set up your home theater surround sound speaker system for a soul-shattering effect. It works superb for me. 1. Place the left and right front speakers in an equilateral triangle with your viewing seat, closer to the viewing seat than the television is, unless you have no center channel speaker. Toe in (angle) the left and right front speakers up to 30 degrees so that most sound seems to be coming from the television. 2. If you don't have a center channel speaker, place the front speakers next to the television. 3. Place the center channel speaker close to the television - on top or in the same cabinet if possible. 4. Set up the subwoofer… [cont.]

How to make an outdoor cat like the indoors?
Q. I have three cats and we have always allowed them to go outside during the day to do whatever cats do. They recently became interested in crossing the busy road by our house and we have decided to keep them indoors. The thing is, they just don't seem to be happy inside. They have always stayed inside during the night, but they want outside first thing in the morning. Are there any ways to "convince" my cats that they would be happier indoors? Every time someone opens the door they try to escape. I would really appreciate any tips on turning my outdoor cats into Happy indoor cats.

How do you clean outdoor furniture pads that are not removable?
Q. We have outdoor wicker furniture on our screened in porch. They have white cushions which have become dirty and stained from polen, cats, etc. Won't spot cleaning leave only patches whiter than the rest?
Asked by gingerspyce1 - Sun Jul 13 14:11:59 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am in the furniture industry and the cleaning will depend on what type of fabric the cushions are made out of. If they are micro fiber or durapella, you can use a very mild soap like neutrogena acne soap ( liquid ). You might also try to use a product called unbelievable. You should be able to get this at any type of cleaning supply store or even a carpet store. I have used it several times!! If you have a tag on the cushion, please let me know the brand of furniture and the cleaning code and I can get you the exact reccomendations from the manufacture.

How do I make my outdoor lights emit red without changing the bulb?
Q. In my film class, our professor mentioned some type of fiberglass gels that you use to change the color of the light. However, I don't think I heard him correctly and now someone wants to put it over their outdoor lights to make them red for the holidays. I'm pretty sure I have the correct material (the woven fiberglass) in mind, but I just want to make certain. if this is the incorrect material, what else can I use to put over my lights as a gel to make the light reds.

What percentage of my home value should I invest in an outdoor living area?
Q. We recently received an estimate on an outdoor living area which totaled 15% of our homes value. Included concrete work, pergola, and outdoor kitchen (inexpensive grill I might add). This seems a little high to me. Also, what type of return do you typically see on outdoor living areas...We don't plan on moving anytime soon but want to know.
Asked by Christie - Fri Oct 23 12:16:22 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The "correct" answer depends on your location. In your area do a lot of these outdoor living areas exist? You might ask a local real estate agent. In North Texas it is so hot in the summer we only use these in Spring or Fall but not so much in the full heat of Summer. My daughter lives in Phoenix where it is even hotter- but some misters can make an outdoor area livable as long as you are not in full sun You do not want to be the only house in your area with one this fancy or expensive. The general rule would be that any addition does not return the amount you spend on it. Updating a kitchen or bathroom that desperately needs it would probably return the most and that would still be less than you spent.

How do I start an outdoor fish pond?
Q. We recently bought a house with a small outdoor concrete pond. We were told by the previous owners at closing that they used to keep fish in the pond. It looks like it holds around 60 - 80 gallons of water. There is a drain hole right in the center, but there is no pump or filter. It hasn't held fish for a some time since the sellers had rented the house for a few years before selling. What do we need to do to turn this into a fish pond? I'm willing to tackle almost any DIY project, but I would prefer not to have to dig up my yard if it can be avoided.
Asked by Nessus - Fri Jul 20 11:21:23 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. How fortunate you are! Digging the hole for a fishpond is one of the most obnoxious tasks in building a pond. It is interesting that there is a drain hole; I wonder where it goes? You do not have to dig up your yard. I put in an 800 gallon pond with fish, plants, and a waterfall last year, and here are my "I wish I'd known that!" tips. 1. If you put a liner in your pond, the more expensive and thicker, the better. Cheap liners are easily punctured and become brittle in the sun. 2. A pond needs an ecosystem. Fish, plants, aeration, sun/shade, filtration, bacteria. - Fish eat algae. Algae is bad. You do not want algae. - Plants provide shade and oxygen for the fish. Algae hates shade. Both submerged plants (water lilies) and… [cont.]

How will I get my outdoor cat use to our new home environment when we move?
Q. I have an outdoor cat, she has always been an outdoor cat except when she was fixed and had to heel she was indoors. She started off being a Ferrel cat and now she is so sweat and is definitely my cat, so she will be moving with us. The thing is like I said she is an outdoor cat and I am worried about the move and getting her acclimated to the new place, that has so much more yard for her, so that she doesn't run away and find her way back to where we use to live. Any ideas.
