Adjective

military (comparative more military, superlative most military)

  1. Characteristic of members of the armed forces.
    • 1891 Arthur Conan Doyle, “The Boscombe Valley Mystery”, in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes:
"My dear fellow, I know you well. I know the military neatness which characterises you. You shave every morning, and in this season you shave by the sunlight; but since your shaving is less and less complete as we get farther back on the left side, until it becomes positively slovenly as we get round the angle of the jaw, it is surely very clear that that side is less illuminated than the other. I could not imagine a man of your habits looking at himself in an equal light and being satisfied with such a result."
  2. (North America) Relating to armed forces such as the army, marines, navy and air force (often as distinguished from civilians or police forces).
  3. Relating to war.
    • 1989 Gregory Flynn, Soviet Military Doctrine and Western Policy‎, page 158:
The only goal pursued by Western defense strategy — to cause the Warsaw Pact to break off an attack — is more military than political in nature.
  4. Relating to armies or ground forces.

Noun

military (plural military or militaries)

  1. Armed forces.
  2. (US, with the) U.S. armed forces in general, including the Marine Corps.
It's not the job of the military to make policy.

A military is an organization authorized to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society.

The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns.

In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was.

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".

Q. My boyfriend is flying me to see him in March. He is in the military. Can he use his military discount to buy me a ticket or can he only use it for himself? I am not sure how this works. What travel sites take military discounts?

A. Unfortunately he will not be able to pass along his military discount to you. You can find other military discounts to use here: Most of the discounts are local discounts and seem to be rather good

A. Korea, as well as most of Asia, will not grant a visa to someone with a criminal conviction. You can be denied for for just having a DUI. As part of the visa application you must provide a copy of your criminal record.
