What's the best broadband speed meter for checking my ISP's performance?
Q. I suspect that it's not what they are advertising.

A. With out any doubt, the best one I've come across is called tcp/IQ. This is a free service out of Australia that monitors your upload and download connections as often as you like during the day and it keeps a database of data for you and shows you graphical information for the last 24 hours, the last week, and the last year. It really came through for me when my service fell below the level I purchased. I was able to document my claims and got a better response to fix it. It's called LineSpeed Meter by tcp/IQ You should definitely check it out.

BSNL Broadband usage.?
Q. I have doubt that BSNL Broadband usage 'meter' is jumping.Am i correct?
Asked by Keshav - Thu Mar 20 02:37:13 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There will not be any jumping. You may be using more download. There is no possibility that some one else uses your account. Wired Broadband is bound to your landline telephone. See that nobody uses your landline elsewhere. Complain to the BSNL authorities and ask them whether your broadband user account is bound to your landline number. Confirm this. There are many cases found like this. They are all just because they are unaware that they are using more download (viewing web sites). To get rid of the risk, take unlimited plans. All the best.

A. To answer simple to your question: Usually connection give to "kilobit per second"(kbps) If you see KBPS then it is kilobyte per second. (1byte=8bit.) (1kilobyte aprox. 8kilobit) If 20KBPS means 20kilobyte per second then it's about 160kilobit per secondso yes it is a DSL speed. Ifi it is 20kilobit per second then it's too slow even for simple telephone connection. To determine what connection you have see your modem. It is a modem router, or a 56kbps modem? I assume though for experience that test meant 20kilobyte per second so you can tell its an ADSL connection. But too slow though. Such tests use lower case letters for kilobit (ex.20kbps) and uppercase for kilobyte (ex.20KBPS). If I am right and you have an ADSL connection, then… [cont.]

Q. hi, ive got bt broadband, we have just had a games room installed at the back of our garden in the garage. i have ran a bt cable out there to provide a new phone socket. the distance is around 20 meters. in the house im getting around 4meg speed, but in the garage im just about getting 1meg, is it because theres more length on the line or have i done something wrong, any help would be great

A. Sounds like its the cable length, you're meant to take your broadband connection from the main phone socket (the first one that was installed with the line or the one closest to where the line enters your property), otherwise performance could be affected. As the other person said you could do this, and then wirelessly send the internet connection to your garage, but even wireless can be affected by interference. However, this probably would be the quickest way to solve this. The other option would be to connect a router to your main phone socket and then run a network cable to your garage, which will give you the best speed and reliabilty. And actually, the third option would be a sort of mix of the previous two ideas, to connect a… [cont.]

A. First of all; if the modem on the floor or there a lot of stuff between it and where you normally use your laptop, try moving it and it's antenna around if you can and see if that helps. This link is selling an adapter that focuses the antenna toward one direction. I don't have own but it looks like something you could make yourself fairly easily. Good luck.

Is wireless broadband as fast as cable, satellite, or DSL broadband?
Q. I just signed up with Cricket wireless broadband. I love it so far (3 weeks now) it went off without a hitch. No cables, no snoddy technicicans coming out to lay cable in my yard and configuring my PC. I just installed the software and plugged in the modem into my USB port - instant broadband! Couldn't have been easier. I'm just wondering about the speed. Can any geeks out there give me the hard facts about speed in comparison to the other broadband options? I know speeds vary depending on network congestion and traffic. I've been watching my handy meter included with the software, and it varies from 50 kbps to 800 kbps. What kind of speed can I get from the other buggers and which is the best of all?

A. It's likely to be one of two things: First, which modem do you have? The modem needs to support 'HSUPA' for you to get faster upload speeds, it will either say HSUPA on the box, or say something like 'upload speeds of 2Mbps'. Assuming your modem supports the higher speed loads, then it's likely to be a coverage problem. T-Mobile claim to support the high speed upload across their entire network, so wherever you get a good signal, you should get upload speeds of 500Kbps or better. Here's a guide to improving your speed: If you still don't have any joy, I'd complain to T-Mobile - they're advertising nationwide high speed uploads, and they're not delivering. Good luck!

Q. I have broadband internet through a cable modem that is connected to an AP . My notebook has built-in wireless adapter, and i am about to use the internet on the notebook max. 7 meters away from the AP (so the distance is not big). A. probobly something is interrupting the line, E.g cell phone, something else wireless, bluetooth adapter all of those things can interact with a wireless signal, try not to use these things and maybe it will get better.

Q. I have broadband internet through a cable modem that is connected to an AP . My notebook has built-in wireless adapter, and i am about to use the internet on the notebook max. 7 meters away from the AP (so the distance is not big). The problem is i can connect to the AP (the AP gets the signal from the cable modem with DHCP),,and my connection is "excellent", 54 Mbps, but the internet disconnects every 1, 2, 3, 4, minutes or so, it depends... but as soon as it is disconnected, it will reconnect again, and then disconnects again in about 3 minutes, then reconnects, etc, etc... what do you advise i should do? give a fix IP? what ? When doing a ping test on the gateway address, only 2 percent is lost. All right, the AP is placed 20… [cont.]

Can I use a meter, like a Fluke meter to test my internet connection?
Q. I usually do not have any issues with my broadband service, however this evening the signal strength to my wireless adapter has been "very strong" one minute, and later I check it and it says "weak signal". My thought is that I may have a bad cable/connection on the other side of the router where the kids have been messing around. To be sure that I am getting a solid throughput, can I test this with the proper Fluke meter? And if so, which one? (Dad is an electrician he may have the right meter)

A. The connection sends data. It's not generating a current or whatever a fluke meter measures (I'm not sure on what a fluke meter is). It's better to directly connect to the modem to test the speed on a site like Speedtest.net.
