How does check verification work at retail stores?
Q. My checkbook was recently stolen and before I could close my account, dozens of checks were written. I am in the process of clearing up this mess, but in the meantime my old checking account is frozen, overdrawn, and closed to further activity. I was able to open a new account after I explained the problem, even though ChexSystems had me in their system as having a ton of bounced checks. Will I be able to write checks to stores that use check verification systems? Or, even though I have a new account number at a different bank, will they cross-reference my name/driver's license number/phone number and not take my checks? A. It scans the account number for previous reports of problems . Your new account should be OK , but checks are so antiquated . I'm down to maybe 6 a year , Why are you writing them ? A. The good news is, if it is leaking you would smell it. You can smell the smallest leaks. So, imo, if you just sniff around, getting your nose close to the joints, you would know if there was any reason to check it out further. I can "sniff" out gas leaks better and faster than I can find them with the solution. I only use that to verify or pinpoint it. You smell it for a while after they fill it too since they have to bleed off the air as they fill it. So don't worry about that. They make their scent from garlic. When a merchant runs your check through their machine does it check if you have funds available?...I get paid by direct deposit tonight and the funds will be in to clear the check by midnight but at the time I write the check the funds will not be in the account, does the merchant actually check to see if funds are available when they put your check through their system or do they just check to see if you have bounced checks before?
