How does check verification work at retail stores?
Q. My checkbook was recently stolen and before I could close my account, dozens of checks were written. I am in the process of clearing up this mess, but in the meantime my old checking account is frozen, overdrawn, and closed to further activity. I was able to open a new account after I explained the problem, even though ChexSystems had me in their system as having a ton of bounced checks. Will I be able to write checks to stores that use check verification systems? Or, even though I have a new account number at a different bank, will they cross-reference my name/driver's license number/phone number and not take my checks? BTW, I don't use a debit card for two reasons: (1) most banks in my area still charge a monthly fee just to put a… [cont.]

A. It scans the account number for previous reports of problems . Your new account should be OK , but checks are so antiquated . I'm down to maybe 6 a year , Why are you writing them ? Unless it is some very small business ( like Our water company ) that cannot process credit or debit , Skip using checks , they are more dangerous and totally cumbersome . Use your debit card , and NEVER put your PIN number on it .

Q. I filed my taxes in January and I still haven't received a state check in the mail. I called my tax preparer and they said to go to Missouri dept. of rev. website and check the status. So I did and it said it has already been sent to on January 28th I still haven't received anything. How can I check and see if it has been cashed or just lost?

A. Contact MODOR and report a lost or stolen check. You should have received it within one or two days of its being mailed.

How should I expect my tax advance check this month?
Q. I always have my tax money go into my checking account. However, this year my 1st check was deposited in my account and about 4wks later I received a paper check which turned out to be my 2nd check. I still don't know WHY my 2nd check was a paper check... How will my tax advance for May arrive? Deposit or check? Thanks.
Asked by me - Tue May 6 13:57:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, it's really complicated!! How did you have your taxes done and how did you pay your fee's!! If you went through H&R Block or Turbo Tax and opted for your fee's to be taken out of your refund, then you will be getting a paper check in the mail!! It sounds like you did a Rapid Anticipation Loan and sometimes you can only get an UP TO amount up front with the remaining on a paper check to follow!! That may explain your 1st and 2nd!! But as far as the rebate...it seems that you'll be getting a Paper Check!! Hope this helped :)

How to check if a wireless router is in good working condition ?
Q. I want to buy a wireless router. Its available at my local computer hardware shop. Its condition is used. How should i check to assure it works fine and hope that it will work fine. I can check whether my laptop can connect to it but what further things do i have to check ? How should I check the range and signal strength as it be good because i will be in the shop.
Asked by Tamour - Sun Sep 6 13:21:29 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ask them to connect it at the shop. If they're unwilling to, connect it at home and ensure a return-policy on unfunctioning goods. Simply ask them to connect it, remove all network security protocols, and connect to it with your laptop! Other things to check are the range of the router, signal strength, and physical condition.

I'm wanting to transfer funds from a checking account at one bank to a checking account at another. I want to write a check deposit it. Who do I make the check out to? Myself? The bank? Cash? The problem is, one account only has about $4, and the other account is at about $-3.86, and I have to transfer money on my lunch hour, so I don't get popped for overdraft fees. That's why I just wanted to go to one bank, deposit a check and be done, instead of driving all over. But thanks all! I'll just make it out to myself.

A. You can make it out to either yourself or cash, but not to the bank. The name on the check just must match the name on the depositing account.

Q. I have a check from a friend and I need to cash it but I no longer have a checking account and the bank my friend uses is not near where I live. Is there a way to cash it somewhere else? I have tried check cashing places but they only cash payroll checks.
Asked by Lonely - Fri Mar 5 20:12:34 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have a friend who uses a bank and will go to their bank with you it's easier. Their checking account is the safety for the bank. If you check bounces they can get it from your friend. Otherwise, sometimes a bank will cash a check when you don't have an account there, but they charge for it. Just ask, can I get a check cashed here? I'm from out of state. Or out of town.

Who is liable for cashing a check that is third party endorsement prohibited and has a stop payment?
Q. We issued a check to an employee, who then called and said he did not receive it. We then placed a Stop Payment on it and re-issued a check. Now in normal circumstances, in California, we would be responsible, but since all of our checks state on the check that "Third Party Endorsement is Prohibited"that we would no longer be responsible. Am I wrong? If so what wording can we put on our checks to protect ourselves?
Asked by JonJon - Wed Jun 10 12:53:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if you put a stop on it no one can cash it. no matter what you have written on it, as long as the stop is on it, its not cash able. but a stop on a check only lasts 6 mos. so if your worried about the check you need to put the stop back on it every six months. if you want to not have to honor the check. where your check is imprinted with the third party warning, under it imprint not valid after 30 or 60 days and the check won't be cashed after that date. if the bank cashes a check that has a stop on it, it's their fault not yours and you can't be charged for that. the bank would have to give you the money back.

A. Yes there is! If you are in the USA you are entitled to a free credit report once a year. According to the Federal Trade Commission: "You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order your report from each of the companies one at a time. The law allows you to order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months." I had the same case exactly a few months ago. I think I'll write an article about this...

They do not have to file taxes but they did fill out forms to get the stimulus check. My moms last two digits are one of the low numbers but so far no check has arrived. Can calling IRS help me with this?

A. You cab go to www.irs.gov and then select Where's my stimulus payment. Keep going until you get to the form that says "Where's my stimulus payment". You will have to enter the social security number as it was on the form they filled out, their filing status, and how many number of exemptions was put down. This will either show you when it should be mailed. If it is not ready it won't show at the time but keep trying. Mine showed the 23rd but it didn't arrive today.

How much weight does a credit check have in gaining employment?
Q. I was wondering two things. First, what is the purpose of a credit check for employment at places like WalMart? I understand background checks, but a credit check? Also, if I do not have good credit, does that mean I cannot be hired for places like this? I just really don't get the point of it if everything else is fine why a credit check matters. Please explain.

A. More and more businesses are using credit checks as part of pre-employment screenings. They may do this under the law as you are potentially entering into a business relationship with them. It is not just banks who do this. Manufacturing job screens typically involve credit checks. In fact, about the only places that don't use them are places like Manpower and Kelly for temp placement and minimum wage jobs. The reason they do this is two-fold. First, many places equate good credit with overall responsibility. My personal feeling is that this is unfortunate. Anyone can fall on hard times and those who are job hunting are generally doing so in order to meet their obligations. Second, it's an employer's market out there. With few… [cont.]

A. You can't know for sure. In fact, the bank may accept it and then, later, determine it's not valid. Your best bet is to, as you've done, contact the school. If you have no reason to receive a check from UCLA, then I'd be suspicious.

How does an education background check work?
Q. I am up for a position and they are in the process of running different background checks on me. The one that concerns me is the education background check. I am exactly one class shy of earning the BS degree that I claimed on my CV. I walked during graduation and everything, but I never got the *incomplete* for that class cleared up and, hence, never completely fulfilled my graduation requirements. In an education background check, do companies verify that you have the degree or just that you attended the university during the dates you claimed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Asked by mike_h - Mon Jun 30 16:53:06 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An education verification typically will verify the highest level of degree obtained. If you did not actually graduate, then it will be reported as such. Many colleges and universities have chosen to outsource their verifications to a third party, so the background screening company usually does not even talk to the school to find any additional information. I would suggest clearing this up. As a follow up, there are fewer companies that verify education backgrounds then criminal backgrounds.

How do I check the credit worthiness of rental applicants?

Asked by Maxwell's Hammer - Tue Mar 24 14:03:26 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Contact the three credit reporting bureaus and open up an account with them (there is a nominal fee for this). You then have to get a signed permission form from the applicant allowing you to access their credit information. You submit this to the credit reporting bureaus - plus a fee that you can pass on to the applicant - and they send out the credit reports for the applicant. It's then up to you to decipher the reports and decide whether this person is credit worthy. If you've never done this before, I would recommend you hire a property management company to secure your tenants. Some charge an upfront fee to market the property and find the tenant. You then have some minimum term (90 days, 6 months, etc.) where they get about 8% of… [cont.]
