An airport is a location where aircraft such as fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and blimps takeoff and land. Aircraft may be stored or maintained at an airport. An airport consists of at least one surface such as a runway for a plane to takeoff and land, a helipad, or water for takeoffs and landings, and often includes buildings such as control towers, hangars and terminal buildings. Larger airports may have fixed base operator services, seaplane docks and ramps, air traffic control, passenger facilities such as restaurants and lounges, and emergency services. A military airport is known as an airbase or air station. The terms aerodrome, airdrome, airfield, and airstrip may also be used to refer to airports, and the terms heliport, seaplane base, and STOLport refer to airports dedicated exclusively to helicopters, seaplanes, or short take-off and landing aircraft. In some jurisdictions, the term airport is used when the facility is licensed as such by the relevant government organization (e.g. the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transport Canada). Elsewhere the distinction is one of general appearance. Other jurisdictions define an airport as having the customs offices etc. expected of a port, though the more general term is airport of entry. And how are runway lights at most airports controlled? Please let me know thank you. Asked by chicago2210 - Wed May 13 20:02:33 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Controlled (towered) airports are airports that handle relatively large volumes of air traffic. The purpose of the tower is to have controllers manage the flow of traffic (with visual, radio, and/or radar contact of all traffic within and around the airport's airspace) to ensure that aircraft within the airport's airspace are adequately separated and fit into an organized flow. For some towered airports, however, the FAA has determined that controllers are only needed during the busiest times of day (during daylight hours) and are otherwise not needed when traffic gets much lighter during the off-peak night hours. Thus, the tower is closed for the evening and the airport becomes an uncontrolled (class E) airport at which pilots are… [cont.] Answered by JoeBlow - Wed May 13 20:29:33 2009 When really did the British airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick really begin to grow ? Q. and how this growth probably compared with growth of airports in other countries such as France, and Germany and USA? (such as JFK in New york ) which decades and years specifically really saw the large commercial jet being used by a large number of people and how this has changed? which decade has seen the largest increase of commercial jets and why? also, how you think this will change in future? finally , how does this size of the airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow compare to the size of airports in other European countries ? how it ranks in size ? (if you know) thanks for your answers! Asked by ! - Tue Jun 15 09:57:10 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Heathrow designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd in 1945. Gatwick designed by FRS Yorke, replanning an irfield that had been used between the wars. Plenty on line about the growth of both airports - which need to be supplemented by Stansted (designed by Fosters) and the regional airports. Answered by Bilbo - Wed Jun 16 12:58:56 2010 What are the available airports in the Cleveland area?
Q. I'm thinking of visiting a friend in the Cleveland, Ohio area later this summer, but I want to be able to get a flight at the absolute lowest price. Therefore, I'd like to know what the available airports are so I can comparison shop. I'm aware of Cleveland and Akron airports; are there any others? Asked by drshorty - Sat May 20 03:52:22 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. You might also check out Pittsburgh PA airport and Columbus OH. They are further away but if you can't get a cheap flight into Akron (CAK) it might be worth checking into. I haven't flown out of CLE for a few years because CAK prices are so much cheaper...to the places we fly anyway.
