Do I have to have my own trucks to open a trucking company?
Q. I would like to open my own trucking company. The main purpose of this company will be to provide owner-operators with dispatch. I`m not planning on buying any trucks at this moment, as I want my future company to be 100% owner-operator co. Can I get registered with DOT if I dont own any trucks? What forms do I need to file? Please help me with this dilemma.

A. Yes, But I agree you want to be a Broker, you Will need to apply for a broker license through DOT cost $300.00, you will need a cash security Bond of $10,000 with a bonding company, when you apply or within 90 after that. Plz keep in mind that you will need freight to move, and if you don't have freight getting started will take sometime but can happen. Look at Freight Broker site take class this will help you a great deal and give you a real look at what you are getting into. Experience will help you a lot know something about transportation business, will help you with contacts. This salesman business, need to be good at it. Overhead is very little, great money, great business

I have talked to several Schneider and Dart drivers who are owner operators and said they have no complaints. I talked to a Western Express driver last week who said he didn't like their van bed division but loved the flat bed division. How to get a list of trucking companies that ship to a specific zip?
Q. Our customer service group needs to be able to look up (on the web, or in a table) how long it will take for all different trucking companies to deliver to a specific zip. We are in Indy, and we want to be able to tell a customer in Detroit that if they ship ABC, it will arrive in 1 day, if they ship XYZ, it will arrive in 3 days. We don't want to have to check each carrier's web site for each order. We would pay for such a service (whomever had such a table). Where can we find this?

A. Fedx, UPS and all their competitors all have that service. If you are shipping something really big try Yellow Freight, JB Hunt or Navajo.

What is the best length of a gooseneck trailer to use for hot shot trucking?
Q. I am starting up a hot shot trucking business with a Dodge 3500 and have heard that a 35 ft trailer with a 5 ft dove tail and ramps to make a 40 ft flatbed is the best option. I have trucked before but am not real familiar with hot shot trucking and I want to get all the payload I can.
Asked by Booter - Sun Jan 6 01:09:15 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Are you talking about a pull trailer, and not a 5th wheel set up?. You mentioned putting extensions on the rear of the trailer. Some states do no allow this modification. If you are going to use a pull trailer the 35 / 40 foot setup sounds reasonable. But you should check with a comercial officer in each state you intend to operate in or through. If you are purchasing a cab and chassis I would put a low mount 5th wheel on it and purchase a 53 foot drop deck trailer with a spread axle.

What is the taxation for interstate trucking?
Q. Specifically, I have a small intrastate trucking firm located in California and we have the ability to expand to Utah, Nev, Arz, Tx. My question is, we are a C Corp filing in California, if we expand, are we required to pay other state taxes if we drop off a load in that state?

A. You are liable to pay the highway use taxes of each individual state. This is based on miles traveled in that state. In addition, your trucks must meet the D.O.T. regulations of each state. That's all.

Can I get out of contract or switch to another trucking company?
Q. I have to drive for Swift trucking for 14 months since they paid for my school. But I was told by a driver with Schnieder trucking that I can switch my contract over to them and still pay off the loan. I know if I were to quit or just not show up I would owe them, but I think I can make better money with another company. Truckers make good money, but I will be broke for the first year, I'm sure.

A. Go to Free Advice on a comnputer engine search. They allows you to post a question to a labor lawyer. A lawyer would have to read the contract to see if there is an out. Probably, if you leave, you would be responsibnle for paying for the training you recdeieved at an anormously high rate. Let a lawyer who understands labor law in your state tell you if ytou could leave without poenalty, and if there is a penalty, can you be sued.

A. It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business. One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.
