What is the federal Government doing to secure the maritime ports of entry in Florida ?
Q. it seems like the federal government allows illegal balseros and cocaine smugglers to freely row card board boats from Cuba to Florida! In my opinion only cuban prostitutes should be allowed and that's it! We need to secure our borders, beginning by our corrupt maritime borders.

Is it hard to get a job as a maritime lawyer in the UK?
Q. I am doing my masters atm in one of the London's (UK) universities - LLM Maritime Law. Next year, I'm planning to do my LPC course. Is it hard to get a training contract in that field? Where should I aim? What are the job prospects? Thank you.
Asked by Jo - Wed Jan 21 17:45:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Don't really know much about maritime law so can't give you a full insight into the job market. However a colleague of mine mentioned that the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is always on the look out for good quality legal advisers. The IMO is a UN body based in London that specialises in maritime issues relating law, regulation, safety and the environment. It may be worth calling them up and requesting a job shadowing session. This will help you find out more about the subject and develop professional contacts. All the best!

In order to become a pilot of a ship or boat do i have to go to a maritime college?
Q. I love boats and being on the water, and would love a career in water transportation(cruises,wh ale watches, tour boats etc.) In order to be a captain or pilot on a ship or boat, would i have to go to a maritime college or the navy or coast guard?
Asked by irishpatriots81783 - Fri Sep 7 21:29:20 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are talking the large ships that come in and out of port the answer is technically NO. All that you would need to do is to pass the pilots exam for that port. Then be accepted into the pilots union. HOWERVER. Many ports require both a state and federal exam. Mostly consisting of reproducing the entire chart from memory. Many pilot unions will not consider a candidate unless they hold a Chief Mate unlimited ticket. The easiest way to get that is to go to a maritime college. The best way to get a feel for things would be to go down and start working on whatever boats are in your area. As a Maritime grad I would say go for the education and degree. You can always do something else later if you change your mind

A. Admiralty means the area of law that applies to maritime cases. Maritime cases are legal cases involving ships at sea or in navigable waters, although this has expanded in some places to include aviation, since aviation did not historically fit land cases and seemed to be sort of maritime in the air. Prize cases were cases in admiralty law that involved the seizure of maritime vessels, --they involved "prizes" of war which explains the use of the word "prize." The particular "Prize Cases" you are probably studying are those decided by the Supreme Court which upheld Lincoln's closing of Southern ports and seizure of their ships. A lot, and in most areas, all, of admiralty law has been absorbed into the normal legal system. In the US there… [cont.]

There is also coming soon the MQ-9 Mariner (a version of the Predator for maritime patrol) and Northrop Grumman has offered a version of the RQ-4B Global Star for the Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) UAV contract competition. The S-3B Viking is NOT a Maritime Patrol aircraft !! It is for carrier-based Sea Control.

I feel you have looked up jobs, and decided that sounds ok. If any job is a Government job you can contact the department and they will send out all requirements. But if you just nosing around for a job, that sounds OK , contact Marine dept of Government Study and talk to them. Most marine jobs that are around like the applicant to have a first Aide Certificate, so you may think of taking a course first.

Becoming officer in USCG after attending a maritime academy?
Q. I would like to go to the USCG Academy to become an officer, but if I don't get accepted, I will go to Mass. Maritime Academy or Maine Maritime Academy, and then go through the MARGRAD program. On the website though, it says: "If you elect to remain in the Coast Guard after your original three-year contract, you may integrate into the regular Coast Guard after selection for Lieutenant (O-3)." A. Ah - a very confusing entry, and I'm not entirely sure that it's accurate any more. The way it USED to be, a direct commission through the MARGRAD program would give you a "Reserve" commission, where you would be a Reserve Officer on an extended active duty contract (in most cases). I had heard that at least SOME Reserve commissions were eliminated, and that those folks got "Regular" commissions - but I don't know if that applied to MARGRAD officers. Best bet is to contact a recruiter via www.gocoastguard.com to find out the newest and best info. At WORST, you would have a Reserve commission, and after being selected for LT, you would integrate to the Active service - if you WANTED to - if not, you could revert to a Reserve status and… [cont.]

Is There A Difference Between Land and Maritime Celestial Navigation?
Q. I'm just wondering because I'm trying to learn Celestial Navigation and I go onto amazon and all the books are about celestial navigation for seafarers. Could these books be used as a starting point for learning celestial navigation on land? Thanks.

A. In so far as determining your position and heading go, yes, with a few provisos. On land you are not constantly moving which means you can gain accuracy in some observations. However, you do not have the same uncluttered horizon that you usually have at sea, and so some timing operations that depend on observing the rise or set of objects can't be done in the same way.

A. A sailing school will simply teach you sail or cruise - navigation, provisioning, boat handling ,etc. A maritime school is usually a 4 yr college that will not only make you a sailor by put you on track to being the capt of a cruise ship or a tanker, or maybe you just want to be an engineer on one of these vessels. The boatyard manager I work at went to one just for that reason. You will get a great education
