Customs is an authority or agency in a country responsible for collecting and safeguarding customs duties and for controlling the flow of goods including animals, personal effects and hazardous items in and out of a country. Depending on local legislation and regulations, the import or export of some goods may be restricted or forbidden, and the customs agency enforces these rules. The customs LEBA may be different from the immigration authority, which monitors persons who leave or enter the country, checking for appropriate documentation, apprehending people wanted by international arrest warrants, and impeding the entry of others deemed dangerous to the country. In most countries customs are attained through government agreements and international laws.

A customs duty is a tariff or tax on the export of goods. In the Kingdom of England, customs duties were typically part of the customary revenue of the king, and therefore did not need parliamentary consent to be levied, unlike excise duty, land tax, or other forms of taxes.

Commercial goods not yet cleared through customs are held in a customs area, often called a bonded store, until processed. All authorized ports are recognized customs area.

How long is customs to get to Thailand from the USA?
Q. I am going to be travelling to Thailand. I have no idea how customs works. How early do I have to show up at the airport, or does that not matter. Is the customs process here or in Thailand when I land? How much time should I account for for customs? If I plan on being back by April 26th, when should I by my arrival ticket for? The 24th, 25th?

A. You do not clear customs or immigration when leaving the US, only when you arrive in Thailand and when you return to the US. Most airlines recommend arriving three hours before an international flight, the lines to check-in and to clear security can be long. The time it takes to clear customs in Thailand and when you return to the US depends on how many other international flights arrive around the same time as yours. It can take as little as 20-30 minutes to clear immigration, wait for your luggage and clear customs, but can easily take an hour.or more, especially if you are pulled aside to be searched. Knowledge of customs allowances and what is prohibited will make clearing customs easier. Most flights from Thailand to the US arrive… [cont.]

Q. I am planning to buy an electric guitar kit on ebay from a US seller. What is the Canadian Customs duty/tax to import an electric guitar kit from the US? but it's a guitar kit, not a complete guitar. and doesn't qualify to be a guitar. Still, I'll try calling them. Thanks for the link.

A. You will pay GST (5%) and PST (you don't specify your province), plus a brokerage fee to the shipping company for clearing customs for you (usually $5-$30). As far as duty is concerned, it depends on the country of manufacture of the goods. The complete canada Customs Tariff will have more details: Electric guitars are dutiable at 6%, don't know about the amp and speaker parts, though.

A. Anyone entering the US must declare their entry to the US Customs. It does not matter if you are travelling by commercial air, private air, boat, swimming or walking. They may open your luggage or subject it to a canine sniff search.
